The CHAOS of the 2022/2023 English Premier League Season.
It Couldn't have been Scripted it Better!
Manchester City's dominance in the English Premier League is becoming less surprising with each passing season. They weren’t at their stellar best, but as Peter Drury eloquently put it, "That's what champions do!" The real excitement now lies in discovering who will step up as their title challengers. This season will be remembered for more than just City's triumph though—it's all about whether they can achieve the illustrious treble.
Let's take a trip down memory lane and discuss storylines that defined this remarkable season. From thrilling comebacks to nail-biting finishes, the campaign was filled with unforgettable turning points. But that's not all—we'll also be handing out awards to honor the standout performers. No surprises here—Erling Haaland is the best player of the season. With his jaw-dropping performances, he has mesmerized football fans worldwide.
Talking Points Of The Season
Arsenal lead the league for 93% of the season
Arsenal fans experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as their team secured a spot in the Champions League by finishing second in the league. However, despite leading the league for an impressive 248 days, Arsenal ended the season without any silverware. The season was deemed successful, but the bitter taste of losing the top spot remains. Fatigue and a crucial moment at Anfield, where Xhaka's actions ignited Liverpool supporters, may have played a part in the downfall.
After last season’s marginal loss of the Top four spot, The Gunners showcased their best form in years with a blistering start to the season. They won their first five games in a row before suffering a defeat against United in September. Their brilliant performances and resilience in securing results even when goals were hard to come by impressed fans. With smart transfers strengthening the squad such as Gabriel Jesus, and Zinchenko, it seemed like Arsenal had what it takes to go the distance. However, they learned that a league campaign is a marathon and that every player's contribution is vital for success in cup competitions.
Despite the disappointment, Arsenal should be ready to bounce back next season. They will aim to use this setback as fuel to drive their ambition for success. The lessons learned will make them stronger and more determined. Arsenal fans can look forward to another exciting campaign as their team rises from the ashes.
Haaland Record-breaking Season
Manchester City made waves in the transfer market, and among their new signings was the Norwegian wonderkid, Erling Haaland. With immense expectations on his shoulders, he not only lived up to them but surpassed them in his debut season. Haaland has left an indelible mark on the English Premier League, not the same but similar to what Messi did under Guardiola's guidance. Imagine what Luiz Suarez could've achieved had he not missed seven games in the 2013/2014 season. It's a testament to Haaland's exceptional ability, placing him in the same league as these legendary players.
In his inaugural season, Haaland shattered records, leaving a trail of awe in his wake. With an astonishing tally of 36 goals and 8 assists in just 35 games, he surpassed Alan Shearer's 29-year record. The young phenom recorded four hat-tricks, earning him prestigious titles such as FWA and Premier League Player of the Year, as well as Premier League Young Player of the Year. What's more, he clinched the league title, all before the age of 23. It makes you wonder, what were we doing at 23?
Brighton’s European Dreams
Brighton has triumphed in securing European football! With shrewd transfers and a brilliant managerial appointment, the seagulls soared above Tottenham Hotspur. This success is a testament to their exceptional front office, tirelessly working for the team's benefit. The rise of footballing talents like Alexis Mac Allister, a World Cup winner with Argentina, the sought-after Moses Caicedo, and the unknown genius Kaoru Mitoma from Japan has fueled their ascent.
Brighton's success is a result of strategic planning and astute management. Owner Tony Bloom's data-driven approach has brought significant resources to the club, enabling them to compete with the big six teams in the EPL. They've even achieved remarkable victories alongside Newcastle this season. Despite potential departures in the upcoming transfer window, Brighton has firmly established itself as a formidable force to be reckoned with.
Chelsea Season of Turmoil
Chelsea's new owner, Todd Boehly, has had a rough ride this season. Despite splashing over 500 million Euros on transfers and cycling through three different managers, the team's performance has spiraled downwards. With an 11-11-16 record and sitting in 12th place, behind struggling Crystal Palace, it's been a disastrous campaign for the London-based club. The opposition fans have lost their edge in mocking Chelsea, realizing the severity of the situation.
With a bloated squad and a lack of drive and identity, the Chelsea Hierarchy faces the monumental task to regain their former glory. The incoming coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has an uphill battle ahead, needing to figure things out quickly. The pressure is on as they aim to reclaim the lofty heights they once stood at. Can Pochettino steer the ship back on course?
Everton’s and Leicester's battle against relegation
The relegation battle had us on the edge of our seats as teams fought fiercely to avoid the dreaded drop. Everton, under Frank Lampard's leadership, struggled to find their rhythm, lacking tactical prowess. Lampard's subsequent dismissal opened the door for Sean Dyche to step in and guide them away from the abyss. Dyche, a master of this survival dance, worked his magic once again.
Leicester City, the 2016 Premier League champions and FA Cup winners as recently as two years ago, faced a tough road this season. Their slow start, with a 1-2-7 record in the first ten games, set the tone for a challenging campaign. The club, still reeling from the financial strain caused by the pandemic, encountered unexpected turbulence. Mistakes like letting go of veteran leader Schmeichel and selling Fofana without adequate replacements further disrupted their path. Things further spiraled, with the club winning only four games since the World Cup Break. The fall from grace caught everyone by surprise. Rebuilding won't be easy, but football fans remain hopeful that this team, known for defying the odds, will come back stronger.
Manchester United showing signs of growth
Putting aside Manchester United’s never-ending sale, the ball club managed to give their fans reasons to be hopeful. They cracked the Top 4, finishing behind rivals Manchester City and Arsenal. They fended off a resurgent Newcastle United to secure their position. With the appointment of Dutch Manager Eric Ten Hag, the club showed its determination to reach the top. The owners backed him financially and granted him authority over player decisions.
The new era had its challenges, with players like Paul Pogba not being resigned and tension between the manager and former star player Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Ronaldo's scathing interview condemning the club's management led to his exit. Manager Ten Hag then brought in exciting signings like Antony and Martinez from Ajax, along with Casemiro from Real Madrid. The rebuilding process was underway.
Amidst the tougher times, Marcus Rashford's outstanding form became crucial for Manchester United. The striker scored vital goals, keeping the team moving forward. His performances showcased the potential for an even better upcoming season.
In a thrilling achievement though, Manchester United won the Carabao Cup. They now face their city rivals, Manchester City, in the finals. The stage is set for an intense battle between the two giants.
Premier League Awards
Now onto the premier league awards.
There’ll be a caveat for this. So that it isn’t dominated by Haaland, Pep Guardiola, and the City team, the awards will be spread around, not just handed to the best team. Somewhat like voters fatigue.
Player of the Season - Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
No dispute here. While Odegaard, Saka, Kane, and Kevin De Bruyne had solid seasons, Haaland's statistical prowess and impact on his club set him apart. He is littered across almost everything good in premier league football.
Manager of The season - Unai Emery (Aston Villa)
Aside from Pep Guardiola at the top, its a close call with other great managers, but Emery transformed a relegation-threatened squad into European contenders. De Zerbi was the strongest contender, especially with what he’s done at Brighton, bringing an ingenious style. What are your thoughts?
Goal of the season - Miguel Almiron (Newcastle)
Watch this and you'll agree.

The signing of the season - Nick Pope (Newcastle)
Many players left their mark, including, obviously Haaland, but Pope stood out as an exceptional goalkeeper, conceding the fewest goals. Only Alisson's heroics prevented him from winning Goalkeeper of the Year.
Best game - Man City vs Manchester United
An intense Manchester derby with both Manchester clubs looking to be in good form. The game featured Hattricks from both Phil Foden and Haaland from Man City. A thrilling match that showcased City's dominance in the end. Other memorable mentions are the Man City Vs Arsenal game at the end of the season, and Liverpool vs Arsenal Draw at Anfield.
Best goal Keeper - Alisson (Liverpool)
Based on the number of saves, Alisson edges out Nick Pope. He had a few mistakes but played a crucial role in Liverpool's fifth-place finish.
Most improved Player - Gabriel Martinelli.
From signing as an 18-year-old in 2019, Martinelli has emerged as Arsenal's top scorer this season. Alongside Saka and Odegaard, he was one of the team's standout performers. Jack Grealish picked form at the right time for City as well, but Martinelli was simply dazzling for a player just finding his footy in the prem.
Young Player of the Year: Saka
While Haaland was a contender, Saka's outstanding performances were instrumental in Arsenal's strong league position. However, their title charge waned after his fatigue set in.
